If you are a beagle owner you must know that you have a Cuddly-munchkin-adorable-little-devil. Here are some tips and useful information, specially if you are a first time dog owner.

Beagle energetic dogs playful small sized breed

Beagles are very playful and energetic dogs. They come up with a small size but a big mischievous mind. Anything you drop they’ll pick that up and run and once they have it, it’ll be like “chasing a chicken”. They can dodge you as a rabbit and run like cheetah!

Let’s talk about some useful things you should keep in mind before bringing a beagle in your life. But before that, if you are thinking a Beagle as your first dog (and you are LAZY) then get used to move your body baby! (This reminds me of a song “Move your Body” :D )

Like every good parents do; prepare yourself first to be a parent and then be the one!”

So, let’s know more about them now!

Personality of a Beagle — They comes under a category of hound dogs and they sniff each and everything comes on their way. …and whatever packet you bring from outside, they’ll be sniff the packet along with you from UP TO DOWN (each inch of you!). They like being loved and cuddly. You can come close to a beagle as close you can and they won’t mind. Most of the time you’ll find them sleeping in your arms like a cute little cuddle pillow with floppy ears.

Exercise/Playing — Along with being cute, they can be too aggressive, and here exercise play the most important part. “YOU HAVE TO MEET THE ENERGY LEVEL OF YOUR DOG. They need at least two times walk and a massive playing session daily (walk can be once a day but without playing with your dog can’t go along). They’ll be aggressive if you don’t channelize their energy. You have to make them tired to calm them or they’ll probably run and you’ll feel like a tornado your house but at last they’ll get tired by themselves (not a good idea though).

Things you can do to make them tired:

  1. Play tug of war with them (but be cautious to learn them to DROP it too).
  2. Play throw and fetch.
  3. Run with them or Walk two times a day.
  4. Small learning session daily (most important).
  5. Play wrestling (You’ll feel like another dog, but yes! most of the owners like this as a play).

Diet and Food: Being a small size breed, they eat little less but they are very choosy about the food. So before bringing Kilos of dog food and treats, get some samples if available. Try variety of food with them to know their likings. There are plenty of human foods dogs can eat. Boiled Eggs, Raw green veggies, boiled potatoes, carrots, peanut butter (preferred home made), Curd/Yogurt, Plain Oats, Apples, boiled chicken, Rice. Check out some recipes to make your baby healthy and happy. :) In initial days (1–6 months) you can feed them every 3–4 hours and give them multi vitamins, calcium and liver tonics as suggested by your vet.

Vaccination: This is most important aspect which you should never ignore and give proper attention on. After getting any dog or any pet, first thing is to know the exact the birth date and go to a vet for vaccination consultancy. (Don’t go to YOUTUBE and try to play with medicines by your own.) Make proper schedule and note every vaccination/deworming dates on the card given by the vet. No matter how famous the doctor is, it’s always preferable to check temperature and Expiry date of the vaccine.

Training: Beagles are little bit hard to train comparing to other breads. You need to spend some time daily and need to learn yourself first to train them or You’ll end up having a stubborn kid with aggressive nature. There are tons of videos on YouTube for training a dog or hire a dog trainer for initial year of training until your dog get used to the commands. Let them learn to “How to behave when someone come to your home as a guest”, “When door bell Rings”, “When to drop the thing which they are not supposed to have their mouth”.

Grooming: As Beagles don’t have long coat, it makes grooming easier on day to day routine. You can brush your dog once a day or once in two days. It keeps your dogs’ hair healthy and fresh. You can suggest your vet for a nice shampoo (I prefer Aloe Vera the most). If you got a puppy who is about 20–25 days of old, DON’T Bathe them. It’s always preferable to get a puppy who is older than a month. You can have a nice massage session of your dog with Coconut oil (mine always lick the oil — which is safe though!). So have some oil on your palm and give a good massage with your finger tips (don’t get afraid of hair fall) They have many of them \(o_-)/.

SURPRISES FOR NEW OWNERS:

  1. Their Milk Tooth falls like a normal human baby and they’ll get a new one.
  2. They’ll hump on you (sometimes it’s their way to show love).
  3. They are just like human babies. They also have liking, disliking like us respective to food and (BATH — Don’t get shy to say if you also don’t like to bath (*_*) .

HAVE SOME LOVELY MOMENTS WITH THESE ADORABLE CREATURES and don’t forget to leave a comment.
